Winchester-born Wayne Bridge is a naturally left sided player, who can play in midfield as well as his more usual defensive position
Bridge joined local club Southampton in 1996 and soon became a fan’s favourite as Saints' fortunes steadily improved under Glenn Hoddle and then Gordon Strachan.
A player who is inclined to make darting forward runs, in 2003 Bridge caught the eye of then Chelsea coach Claudio Ranieri and moved to the London club in a £7 million deal in the midst of Roman Abramovich’s early spending at Stamford Bridge.
Competition from high-calibre players such as Asier Del Horno and Ashley Cole have stopped Bridge from retaining a first team place, with Bridge also playing understudy to Cole at international level.
After a few years as Cole's understudy, Bridge has moved away to establish himself again as a top class left back. The former saints player has joined Manchester City for an undisclosed fee during the 2009 winter transfer window.
