Former Rangers kid who dabbled south of the border but is back in Scotland as a mainspring of Motherwell's midfield
Once a promising youngster at Rangers, Hughes made over 70 appearances under Dick Advocaat and Alex McLeish, but he looked a little featherweight and never quite put his stamp of authority on the first team, despite his obvious ability.
He was offloaded to Leicester in 2005, where he became a regular throughout his two-and-a-half seasons. However, the arrival of Martin Allen as boss resulted in Hughes returning north. He has since become a catalyst in Motherwell’s midfield, and his incisive passing, intelligent runs into the box and strong work ethic were the source of much of Motherwell’s creativity in 2007/08.
