Knowns for his defensive rigour as much as his eye for goal, the Brazilian has overcome injury to become a big player for Sevilla
Born in Brazil, Renato first appeared as part of the national youth team that reached the 1995 U-17 FIFA World Championship Final. His professional career began three years later with Sao Paolo club Guarani, where a host of impressive performances helped instigate a move to the renowned Santos club.
Over five seasons and 126 appearances, Renato’s sound defensive abilities and goal-scoring threat from midfield helped Santos to the 2002 league championship. In the culminating knockout phase of the competition Renato scored the winning goal in the final against Corinthians, sealing the club’s first domestic championship since 1968.
By 2004 Renato’s Santos career and international endeavours for Brazil had encouraged a number of European suitors. After taking part in the Brazil squad that emerged triumphant from the 2004 Copa America, Renato signed for Sevilla of Spain mid-way through 2004-05.
Though he won a place in the Sevilla midfield, Renato endured a more testing second season. A number of injuries relegated him to the sidelines, though 2006-07 saw a return to full fitness. As Sevilla swept to a UEFA Cup and Spanish Cup double, Renato appeared in 46 games and scored five goals, combining defensive rigour with an eye for goal.
