Defender

They try to take the ball past Nyron, but he says "No, no, no"

Sunderland's rejuvenation may have been built on the feelgood factor of the Niall Quinn-lead consortium taking over, but you could scarcely accuse the Black Cats of buying glory-boys en masse: their promotion was built upon a base of previously unheralded players.

One such is Nyron Nosworthy, who began his career as a full-back at Gillingham but has been a revelation at centre-back since moving to the Black Cats in June 2005.

The Brixton-born defender was voted Sunderland’s Player Of The Season after the 2006-07 Championship-winning campaign and, in his second spell in the Premier League, has established himself as one of the club’s most valuable performers and is fast gaining cult status. Known as Nuggsy, Nosworthy was called up to the Jamaica squad for the first time in October 2007.

A real cult figure at the Stadium of Light, Nyron's sheer athleticism and workrate just about make up for his lack of quality and at times woeful distribution. Seen by many as a weak link at the back and a veteran of Sunderland's record breaking last Premier League effort it will be interesting to see whether his rebirth as a half decent centre back (moved by Keane from the right back position) will be enough to save his career on Wearside.
