Rough, rugged and the perfect foil to Rio Ferdinand at the heart of the United defence. Not afraid of putting his head, torso or legs in where it hurts
Vidic has developed a superb defensive understanding with Rio Ferdinand in the centre of United’s defence.
Commanding in the air and solid in the tackle, he came through the youth ranks at Red Star Belgrade before joining Spartak Moscow in summer 2004. Six months later, Alex Ferguson nabbed him.
Vidic appeared somewhat rusty at first (the Russian season had long finished), but gradually his ability shone through. Injury kept him out of the title run-in in 2006-07, but he was virtually ever-present as United retained their Premiership the next season, and was arguably the best player on the pitch in the 2008 Champions League Final.
