Was touted for success at Old Trafford but failed to live up to the hype. A gifted playmaker let down by a fiery temperament
One of Fergie’s would-be prodigals at Manchester United, Stewart failed to make the grade and was finally shipped off to Hearts on loan.
His initial spell in Gorgie in 2004-05 – blighted by injury – was a disappointment, and he crossed the great divide to Hibs after a single season.
After two more unspectacular campaigns at Hibs, he fell out with John Collins and rejoined Hearts in the summer of 2007, and his first season back at Tynecastle proved a considered success.
A skilful and influential playmaker in the middle of the park, Stewart has rediscovered some of the spark that made him such a promising prospect as a young man, but his temperament remains suspect.
