Club captain is the heart of Betis' defence
Club captain and Spain international ‘Juanito’ has been the rock at the heart of the Betis defence since 2001. Quick and with a great sense of positioning, the central defender first played for his home side Cadiz in the 1996-97 season but moved to Betis B the following season.
In 2000-01 he moved to Recreativo but quickly returned to Betis, where he soon established himself as a permanent fixture – playing 25 times in his debut season.
In 2005 he was in the Betis team that won the Spanish Cup and he was part of Spain’s triumphant Euro 2008 campaign. Also played at the 2006 World Cup, scoring against Saudi Arabia.
