Freed from the reserves at Villa Park - to many Villans' distress – the talented centre-back will hope to catch Capello's eye
Cahill came through the Aston Villa youth system but made his name during a loan spell at Burnley before returning to Villa Park and playing 27 league games.
The Sheffield-born central defender endeared himself to fans with an acrobatic goal against Birmingham but was loaned out to Sheffield United at the start of the 2007/08 season. Bolton fended off competition from Birmingham to capture Cahill for £5m in January 2008.
The fee was seen as a risk for such an inexperienced player but Cahill showed maturity beyond his years with some fine performances. An excellent reader of the game with speed on the ground and power in the air, the England under-21 international has been tipped for full honours in the future.
