Showunmi has arrived at Elland Road with big expectations, although a career strike record of roughly 1 in 6 doesn’t really inspire...
A tall, bustling striker who has great pace if not great composure in front of goal, Showunmi burst onto the scene with Luton Town during the 2003-04 season, where seven goals in a 12-game spell made him a firm favourite with Hatters fans.
His form earned a call-up to the Nigerian national team but despite his early success, Showunmi became less of an influence as Town climbed to the Championship. Often deployed as a sub or in midfield, he netted a total of 14 goals in 102 appearances before joining Bristol City for the start of the 2006-07 campaign.
At Ashton Gate he finished his first season with 13 goals, second only to Phil Jevons, but the club’s arrival to the second tier in 2007-08 again signaled a return to the sidelines. A loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday preceded a permanent move to Yorkshire, with Leeds, in July 2008.
