A former giant killer at Shrewsbury, Artell helped the Shrimps slay neighbouring rivals Preston in just his second appearance
Experienced central defender Artell needed just two games to make his mark on Morecambe as his late scrambled effort at Deepdale earned the Shrimps a shock Carling Cup upset at neighbouring giants Preston North End.
An imposing no-nonsense centre-back who never shies away from a challenge, Artell began his career at Rotherham before being loaned out in 2002 to Shrewsbury, where he was part of the side that dumped Everton out of the FA Cup at Gay Meadow.
Further spells at Mansfield and Chester followed before signing for the Shrimps, where he built up an effective partnership with Jim Bentley and weighed in with four goals from set-pieces during his debut season.
